The Best Blanco Mojito (aka Tequila Mojito)
Whether you’ve run out of rum or you just like tequila better, a blanco mojito is a great variation on the classic mint and rum cocktail. Just keep in mind, it won’t be exactly like the original. Tequila brings a less round and sweet flavor to the drink. But for tequila lovers, it’s the kind of flavor you’ll crave.
What’s a tequila mojito?
The Mojito is a Cuban cocktail typically served in a tall glass with lots of ice. It’s considered a highball cocktail, a category of cocktails with a high proportion of mixer to alcohol. That’s part of the reason a mojito is such a popular summer cocktail. It is topped with a long pour of soda, making it as hydrating as it is intoxicating. The other reason a mojito is a popular summer drink is because it features the refreshing summer herb, mint.
There are many variations on the classic mojito recipe, most of which include adding fruits. But for this version, we’re swapping the rum for the distinctive flavor of tequila.
Ingredients
For a mojito made with tequila, you need:
- Blanco tequila
- Fresh lime juice
- Fresh mint leaves
- Club soda
- Simple syrup
Most of these ingredients are self-explanatory. In fact, a mojito tequila cocktail is an incredibly easy drink to prepare. But just in case you’ve never made simple syrup, you just heat equal parts granulated sugar and water, (for example a half cup of each), in a small saucepan until the sugar is dissolved. Cool your syrup completely and store it in the refrigerator in an air-tight container.
Is a mojito with tequila as good as the original?
So, is a mojito with tequila good? It’s great if you like the flavor of tequila!
Like rum, tequila is a spirit with a distinct flavor. However, because rum’s flavor leans toward tropical, it tends to accentuate the cocktail’s sweet, tropical vibe. But tequila has a sharper flavor and gives the drink more of a bite. Imagine the effect of drinking a margarita with mint. It’s sort of like that.
How do you make it?
This blanco mojito recipe comes from Noel Family Distillery, a Louisiana distillery making small-batch tequilas with their Mexican partner distillery. They recommend using their ultra-premium blanco to make this mojito recipe. Of course, you should use your favorite blanco tequila, however, theirs makes a great choice.
To make a mojito, you start by muddling the mint in a cocktail shaker. Then all you have to do is add the tequila, lime juice and simple syrup and shake with ice. It’s really that simple. You top the drink with club soda (or seltzer if you prefer) and serve.
