This Vegetarian Bouillon is the Best Vegan Bone Broth
You may have heard the hype about a healing drink called bone broth. Of course, as the name implies, bone broth is made from animal bones. This means the benefits of bone broth are exclusive to meat eaters, unless you can create a vegetarian alternative or even a vegan bone broth.
It is easy to make a vegetarian soup stock but to recreate the healthy attributes of bone broth in a vegan broth is a cooking skill that takes some specialized knowledge of dietetics. So when I was approached to try Green Broth By Design’s bone broth alternative for vegans, I was excited to give this pre-packaged vegan powder a try.
But what is it about bone broth that’s so special that we need to buy a vegan version of this soup?
What is bone broth?
Bone broth is soup stock. It is made by simmering the bones and connective tissue of animals, like the carcass from a rotisserie chicken.

A drink that’s been part of human nutrition, we think, since prehistoric times, bone broth took a recent leap in popularity, thanks largely to the paleo diet. A filling yet low calorie drink, bone broth has a reputation for healing many ailments. It is recognized for aiding digestion, improving joint health and brain function and even help you sleep. It also offers several nutrients known to benefit sexual health. And bone stock is recognized as a great aid in weight loss because of a satisfying flavor and ability to make you feel full.
Bone broth contains both calcium and collagen. However studies like this one demonstrate that the amount of calcium transferring from the bones to the stock is quite small.
The collagen, on the other hand, does transfer to the broth. But your body can’t absorb it directly. But your body can use the nutrients in the collagen. In fact, the collagen in bone broth will provide your body with several important amino acids.
How do you make a vegetarian bone broth substitute?
You obviously can’t make a vegetarian substitute for bone broth from bones! But you can make a rich stock with many properties similar to those found in bone broth using plant based sources.
You can choose a base of vegetables that offers the nutrients and healing properties you’re looking for if you want a vegan stock offering healing benefits. Unfortunately, it takes many more ingredients to make a vegan broth.

Does vegan bone broth have collagen?
One thing you won’t get from a vegetarian version of bone broth is collagen. But you can get many of the same building blocks of collagen from plant sources that you would from bones. Remember, the collagen in bone broth isn’t absorbed directly into your system, anyway.
Like I said earlier, it can be tricky to get the nutrition you want by formulating a veggie broth alternative to bone broth. That’s why I’m recommending Green Broth By Design. An organic, vegan, powdered bone broth mix, it is made with pea protein, which is rich in amino acids and mimics the sensation of fullness you get from traditional bone broth. It also has an interesting benefit that could give your sex life a boost. Seriously!
A review of Green Broth by Design Vegetable Bouillon Powder
This veggie bone broth alternative comes in both a large, multi-use container and single-serve packets.
To make the broth, you simply add it to hot water. The company recommends using a blender to mix. (I love my Vitamix with the hot soup setting for tasks such as this.) But you can easily mix by hand in the cup using a whisk.
The weight and viscosity of this vegan bone broth alternative truly replicates the real deal. If you didn’t know you were sipping a vegan soup, I’ll bet most taste testers would be fooled by this organic broth.
The flavor is similar to a lightly salted chicken or turkey stock. The only telling sign that this is a vegetarian soup powder is in the aroma, which has just the slightest note of green pea.
The ingredients in this bone broth for vegetarians
This unique vegan soup powder is made from a proprietary blend of pea protein blended with a mixture of spices chosen for flavor as well as health benefits and it may even improve your sexual health.
The health benefits of this vegetarian substitute for bone broth
As I mentioned earlier, this vegetarian version of bone broth offers some amino acids from pea protein. Which means it gives you some great building blocks for getting more healthy. But we’re really here to talk about sexual health. So where does this vegan broth fit in when it comes to getting sexy?
Is this bone broth going to give my sex life a boost?
Time to get excited about drinking soup!
This green broth is a source of l-arginine. This amino, which happens to be one of the amino acids found in pea protein, is noted as important for sexual health because it converts to nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide helps the blood vessels relax and promotes blood flow. It is recognized for improving erectile function in men suffering from ED.
Green Broth by Design is also a source of protein. A single 53-calorie serving boasts 10 grams of protein. And, let’s face it, without energy from protein, we’re in no shape to dance the all-night, horizontal lambada.
The broth is also a source of vitamin A, magnesium and iron. These nutrients are all going to help your sex life in one way or another.
And, although it may not boost your libido, keep in mind that this green broth is completely free of animal products and is a healthy alternative to bone broth for you and the environment.
Where to buy this veggie bone broth
You can explore the whole Broth By Design lineup on the company’s website. They also make traditional bone broths from grass-fed beef.
