Black Velvet – the Irish Champagne Cocktail
The Irish Champagne cocktail known as the Black Velvet is as bold and intriguing as its name suggests. A striking blend of Guinness and Champagne, this cocktail offers a contrast of flavors—dark, malty richness balanced by crisp, effervescent brightness. It’s a drink with a story, one that’s been poured in Irish pubs and high-end establishments alike for over a century.
The Black Velvet’s origins are debated. Some say it was first mixed in 1861 at London’s Brooks’s Club to commemorate the death of Prince Albert, with the dark stout symbolizing mourning. Others argue it began in Dublin, where Guinness is king. A third theory even traces its roots to Germany. But no matter where it was first created, this cocktail has stood the test of time as a seductive, celebratory drink.
And while it’s often associated with St. Patrick’s Day, this Irish Champagne cocktail is far too sexy to be limited to just one holiday. The interplay of rich stout and sparkling wine mirrors the kind of chemistry that makes a great romance—opposites attracting in the most delicious way. Whether you’re planning a St. Patrick’s Day date night or just looking for an unexpected and indulgent aperitif, the Black Velvet is a drink worth savoring.
