The Best Champagne Stopper for Keeping Your Bubbly Sexy
Opening a bottle of Champagne is usually the easy part. The tricky part is what to do with the rest of the bottle when you’re not ready to finish it.
I’ve tested more wine gadgets than I care to count, and most of them have eventually found their way into the great kitchen-gadget graveyard. But there is one wine gadget I’ve used for years and would happily replace if it ever disappeared from my kitchen: the Metrokane Rabbit Champagne Sealer.
It’s compact, easy to use and, most importantly, it actually keeps sparkling wine worth drinking after you’ve opened the bottle. I’ve tried just about every sparkling wine stopper on the market, and the Rabbit is the one I keep coming back to.

Why you need a Champagne stopper
You may be wondering why in the world someone would need a Champagne stopper. After all, sparkling wine tends to go down pretty easily once that cork is popped. But sometimes you want to save the rest of the bottle for another glass, another meal, another date or another romantic occasion.
Say, for example, you want to have a Champagne toast but need to go back to work afterward. Or maybe you want to toast your lover but they have to drive later and only have half a glass.
And while I have no problem believing you could take care of the rest of that bottle on your own, wouldn’t that last glass taste better another time, when your taste buds are fresh and excited for the crisp, thirst-quenching power of a yeasty sparkling wine? Especially if that special someone is snuggled up beside you, sipping sparkling wine with you?
That’s why I’m recommending the Metrokane as the best Champagne stopper. I’ve tried just about every sparkling wine stopper on the market and this is the only one I’m anxious to recommend. It keeps the bottle sealed so you can enjoy the remaining Champagne later, rather than feeling like you need to finish it simply because you’ve opened it.

Why the Rabbit is my favorite sparkling wine stopper
What sets the Metrokane Rabbit apart from other sparkling wine stoppers is its twist mechanism. With many Champagne stoppers, you push the stopper into the bottle and clamp or fold the mechanism into place. And sometimes those clamps fail. I’ve even had one shoot off like a rocket.
The Rabbit works differently. You push the stopper into the bottle, then twist the handle to lock the seal tightly.
I like the design for a few very practical reasons. First, it’s compact, so it doesn’t take up much room in a kitchen drawer, wine cabinet or refrigerator. (Some wine sealers are too tall for my shelf.) The shape also makes it easy to hold while you’re twisting the mechanism into place. And the twist itself is remarkably smooth. There’s no wrestling with the stopper or awkward fiddling to get it securely fastened.
But the real test is what happens after the bottle is sealed.
Is it as good as a freshly uncorked bottle? No stopper is going to make an opened bottle identical to one you’ve just popped. But I find that the Rabbit keeps sparkling wine tasting pretty much like it’s freshly opened for about twelve hours.
I’ve also tested it for considerably longer. If the bottle is left undisturbed, I’ve found that the Rabbit can hold onto the bubbles reasonably well for three to four days. Yes, days. (And yes, I know it’s hard to believe that I could let an open bottle of sparkling wine sit around that long, but I tried it in the name of science.)
That’s considerably longer than I would expect from simply putting the cork back in or using a basic stopper that doesn’t create as secure a seal. And while I don’t recommend treating any open bottle of sparkling wine like a laboratory specimen, having a reliable stopper means you don’t have to finish a bottle simply because you opened it.
