Return to my Roots with Ferrari Carano

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: my experience in the wine industry has not always been glamorous. I started out, at 21, working in the tasting room of Ferrari Carano Vineyards and Winery in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. It was in the Dry Creek that I truly fell in love with wine.

Since it had been a few years since I sat down and tasted FC’s ever-growing lineup of wines, last month I decided to pay a little visit to my roots. Here’s how it went down:

This wine wasn’t around in my tasting room days, but I wish it had been. This is one of those simple summer drinks I could reach for every day from May to October.2006 Ferrari Carano Fume Blanc
An old favorite of mine, FC’s Fume is for those people who want a little body in their whites without the heaviness of a super-oaked California Chardonnay.2005 Ferrari Carano Chardonnay
Just the way I remember it, FC’s Chard is one of those classic, mid-priced American Chardonnays. It’s got a little more oak than I normally care for, but if you want a Chard to drink with that steak, this would do the trick.

2004 Ferrari Carano Siena
Without a doubt Ferrari Carano’s best-priced wine, Siena is the winery’s “Super Tuscan.” A blend of Cab and Sangiovese, it has a lovely balance of terroir, acid and body.

2004 Ferrari Carano Merlot
As you may have already figured out, I don’t like Merlot – no, nothing to do with Sideways. But if I had to drink an American Merlot, this nicely structured number would be on my short list.

2004 Ferrari Carano Tresor
I’m a sucker for great packaging and on looks alone, this wine gets an A+. That being said, the wine in the bottle – a Bordeaux-style blend – lives up to its eye-catching package with fine grain tannins and rich, plummy flavor.

2003 Ferrari Carano Prevail Back Forty
One of the newest wines in the FC lineup, Back Forty is a manly man’s wine. It is as rich, ripe and burly a wine as you could hope to drink. Pour it for a man you want to romance. Results are almost guaranteed.
