woman on wine with amy reileyn summer, I often find it a stretch to sip bold reds. I prefer the crisp whites of Europe’s cold climate growing regions. Now, those in the wine business know there is one go-to guy when you’re looking for something cold, crisp and elegant. Terry Theise is one of the New World’s greatest wine treasures. He is the guy who champions some of the tiniest, most obscure and utterly brilliant German and Austrian vintners and brings their hard-to-find wines to the U.S. market. At a recent tasting of some of his imports, the following are just a mere hint of the wines that knocked my little bobby socks off. |
2007 Gruner Veltliner ‘Gobelsburger’
An absolute bargain by any standard, this is just the sort of wine you want to stock up on for long summer afternoons by the pool. Simple, clean, fresh and delicious – you really can’t beat it for the price.
Minges
2007 Burrweiler Schlossgarten Muskateller Spatlese
A bright, well-structured wine, it offers a playful sweet and tart flavor profile. Passion fruit and citrus mingle, but an herbal, elderflower quality on the finish gives the wine complexity and interest.
Muller-Catoir
2007 Mandelgarten Riesling Spatlese Trocken
Finely crafted, with a bouquet of wild herbs and flowers from dandelion to chamomile to lemongrass, it is an elegant drink with an unusual edge.
Salomon
2007 Gruner Veltliner Von Stein Kremstal DAC Reserve
A hint of residual sugar helps gives this wine its gorgeous, full body. Mouthwateringly sweet – but not too sweet – its lime-pie flavors finish with just a whiff of white pepper.
2007 Muscat
Well priced as compared with the other wines in its category, this is one of those wines that will make you feel like you hit the jackpot when you score a bottle. A beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers coupled with elegant structure and delicate fruit flavors. Just a hint
