This month I was asked by Gayot.com what would be my top 10 Valentine wines. Its easy to fall back on the cliches of sexy bottles or suggestive names. But I wanted to put together a collection of wines that offer more than innuendo. I wanted to recommend wines that offer aromas, tastes and textures ripe for an evening of romance. Here’s a sneak peak at my picks. You can find all 10 at: http://www.gayot.com/wine/top10valentinesdaywines/main.html

Wild Bund Eden Valley Riesling
Tin Shed
If you thought Riesling couldn’t be sexy, think again. This well-balanced wine offers faint, exotic, floral aromas mingled with that classic petrol scent. On the palate it is deliciously restrained yet still fresh with a hit of lime followed by a rainbow of exotic fruit.

Alexis
Swanson
A study in contrasts, this is a big, serious wine with surprisingly feminine qualities. Although the nose has masculine, pheromonal notes of cedar and leather on the tongue this red blend offers complex and delicate black cherry, black currant and a hint of eucalyptus. The finish lingers long with caramel and toasted oak.

Brandenburg No 3
Venturi Schulze
If you love the unexpected, try this unusual after dinner drink made from the Madeleine Sylvaner grape. Its silky, weighty texture is like that of fine sherry and its flavors a rich mixture of caramel, tart apples and sweet, dried fruits. On the finish, there is an underlying earthiness with an undeniable sex appeal.

30 year old tawny
Taylor Fladgate
This is a wine worth the splurge if your aim is a night of seduction. Though it offers the sweet richness typical of port, the Taylor balances sweet with tongue-teasing freshness. The honey and ripe fruits that dance across the palate are lovely but the wine’s finest attribute is its finish, long and seductive with toffee, chocolate and roasted nuts.
