Ravenswood Winery in California’s Sonoma County is famous for Zinfandel. In fact, the winery is considered the #1 Zinfandel producer in the world. I had the opportunity to sit down and taste through the winery’s lineup with founder-winemaker (and head Zinhead) Joel Peterson.

I was surprised by the wide variety and regional distinctions in each of his single vineyard wines, many of which are made entirely from pre-prohibition vines. There’s truly something for everyone in this wide array of wines, all celebrating a single grape.

2008 Big River
Alexander Valley
Bright and interesting, it offers a surprising combination of berry and fennel on the nose. It offers a direct and intense array of fruit flavors including red raspberry, black currant and plum with zippy acid, approachable tannins and a lingering finish.

2008 Dickerson
Napa Valley
Rich, dark and sweet, it offers vanilla, berries and a hint of orange. Tangy to balance its up front sweetness, it has a delicious raspberry pie note in the middle with an herbal freshness at the back of the palate.

2008 Old Hill
Sonoma Valley
Full of surprises, this wine begins with kumquat, creamsicle and spice on the nose. Made from grapes originally planted in the 1800’s, it’s big and spicy with a bit of berry, cocoa and espresso toward the finish.

2008 Teldeschi
Dry Creek Valley
Powerful on the nose, its aromas include black cherries, chocolate and a hint of candle smoke. In the mouth, there’s the sweetness of black cherry and vanilla combined with more delicate rose petal note.

2008 Barricia
Sonoma Valley
Showcasing Zin’s softer side, the wine begins with raspberry, vanilla, spice and worn leather aromas. Sweet with silky tannins, it offers blackberry, anise and orange zest in the mouth, all presented with finesse.

2008 Belloni
Russian River Valley
The most vegetal of all the wines, it is complex, and fairly earthy on the nose. In the mouth, its bright fruit notes come out, including boysenberry, marionberry and plum with underlying tobacco, espresso and spice.
