Travel to Mexico, Imanta Style

Mind in a maelstrom over Mexico? The choices for resorts in Mexico are as heady and varied as notes on a perfumer’s palette. But one Mexico travel experience deserves a spot of its own, a golden distillation in a menagerie of sensual possibilities: Imanta Punta de Mita.

Find Imanta along the length of a long forested road. You’ll see rocky cliffs jutting out from the jungle leading to nowhere but the crashing ocean beyond. Imanta’s pre-Columbian castle lair presides above the waves, its own kingdom of eight “casas” and “casonas.” It’s a Mexico travel secret that unfolds in moment to moment, much like the life of a sacred scent or a perfect glass of wine.

For all its privacy and quietude, civilization comes easily here. Imanta in Punta de Mita is less than an hour’s drive from Old Town Puerto Vallarta and even closer to the Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR). Not to be confused with Punta Mita, a private resort community of golf and manses anchored up by the Four Seasons and St. Regis, Punta de Mita is the town. This is the area found at the base of Riviera Nayarit where some of the best beaches in Mexico stretch northward along the Bay of Banderas: Mexico’s largest natural bay. At the top end is the lazy seaside village of San Blas and nearby find the bustling beach town of Sayulita and the artsy community of San Pancho.

But the Mexico travel experience to be found at Imanta is a world of its own, protected by 250 hike-able acres of pristine tropical forests and enhanced by magical spa treatments and seductive accommodations opening onto a smooth, private beach that extends for two miles.

If jungle, ocean, mountains and aesthetic vision have a meeting place it is at Imanta. Coming into the resort is like happening on a hidden Aztec temple. From the outside the architecture blends tastefully with the land and its history while interior and settings are laced with modern wows: private infinity pools, outdoor showers, wired entertainment and Internet systems, private chef options, wood and stone flooring, terraces overlooking jungle and ocean, and windows opening to air and light in all directions.

To retreat to Imanta is to know spa treatments, such as the Prehispanic Hot Stone massage delivered on the beach or under crackling palms. Or have a vision deep in the jungle where a temascal, or sweat lodge, aids the meditation. Yoga is only one of the classes one can experience during a stay. This is relaxation and rejuvenation at its word with immersions in biking, hiking, birding, snorkeling, horseback riding, surfing, diving and even turtle and whale watching for the asking. Tour nearby villages or watch the action of nature unfold right where you are.

Imanta is a Punta de Mita resort that requires nothing else. While you may want to explore local cuisine at area restaurants in Punta de Mita, the catch of the day is waiting for you under a shady palapa on your private Mexico beach. Order up a secluded romantic dinner at water’s edge or a sun-dappled breakfast in the jungle. Even dining is a complete Mexico travel experience to be imagined, created and savored at Imanta.

Reserve a casa, big enough for three as these expansive one-bedroom suites larger than most homes. Or make it a casona with multiple master bedrooms connecting to a private Olympic-size pool over the ocean and roaming room for large families. A wedding at Imanta need not concern itself with uninvited guests when the whole intimate resort can be booked par tout for quite the affair.

But for those who want to luxuriate and linger, or those who want to saturate themselves in a sense of place, Imanta has two packages ready to whisk travelers to their own private paradise.

Divine Packages at Imanta include such indulgences as:

Palazzo Victoria Adds Poetry to Verona

Romance, Renaissance-style, might begin with a 14th century palace within pebble-throwing distance from the balcony of Shakespeare’s Juliet. The City of Verona is not Shakespeare’s alone. The spot that has been the muse of historians and poets is now the second city to bear the stamp of Veronese Marcello Pigozzo. The master visionary for “Il Salviatino” in Florence is giving a March opening to the Palazzo Victoria in Verona.

As with the legendary Il Salviatino, the Palazzo Victoria is steeped in history. The stunning palace was built at the cusp of the 14th century, possibly as a palace, possibly as a modest castle or stately doge’s home, but most assuredly as an emblem of endurance on a site of what was once Roman ruins.

Palazzo Victoria now sits as a living museum replete with 70 restored rooms and suites designed in the careful traditions of Verona aesthetics: high ceilings, textured tapestry wall coverings, antique furnishings, fine fabrics and high thread count linens, and large shuttered windows looking onto trendy Corso Porta Borsari.

While rooms here are the stuff of dreams, they are built on cultures stretching back through civilization for more than two Millennia. Guests get their history — and their comforts, too:

• 24-hr room service

• Air conditioning

• Stocked Mini bar

• Satellite TV

• Fitness room area

• Complimentary Wi-Fi

• Laundry Service

Bistros and espresso shops line the narrow historic streets of Corso Porta Borsari just outside the property. But guests enjoy the casual-chic Brasserie of Palazzo Victoria and consider it address enough for regional cuisine prepared for all the day’s meals by the property’s Michelin-starred Chef, Carmine Caló.

Palazzo Victoria has the benefit location in the center of Verona — a city of thousands of years and thousands of words. The palace sits in the shadow of the Arena amphitheatre, a Roman gem of standing ruins often used as a mesmerizing backdrop for operas and concerts. Nearby, find Lake Garda, surrounded by pine forested hills and some of the world’s most extravagant geo-thermal spa resorts. Sample the local Valpolicella wines, potent enough to help many a poet find his voice. Fortify with an aperitif at Piazza Bra, Piazza delle Erbe, or Piazza dei Signori. Then wander the preserved ruins of modern civilization amid such museums as the Romanic and Palladian arts and Castelvecchio.

A stay in Verona is by default an immersion in layers of history, pages of literature, and moments in lost time. Let Palazzo Victoria be the textural binder of that experience, as the hardbound preserved, aromatic covers of an old book well read.

Travel and Romance? Great Packages for Valentine’s Day

love is in the air at wailea beach villas

by Lark Ellen Gould

OK, so you’ve been planning for this special day for a month, six months, even a year. Your romantic travel destination is a spot you’ve been designing in your head – to pop the question, make the question pop, make a heart pop. But when you get to get to that special place, the only thing that pops is your temper. It’s a room without a view, a hotel on a highway, a cozy cottage blocks from the beach.

Romantic travel is its very own special focus and best left for travel agents who can stand, come what may, by what they recommend. And often what they will present in their tool box of choices is a one-of-a kind romance experience as can be found through such stand-up companies as the Kurtz-Ahlers collection.

Kurtz-Ahlers & Associates has put together an elite collection of destination properties around the world, each of them a signature and an imprint that adds to the collection. Each venue offers privacy, purpose and a complete package of pampering. You won’t find hotels on the highway here or beach bungalows sans la plage. Rather, it’s a Valentine of perfection for serious romantics.

Get ready fly. Get ready to soar.

Italy

If it’s a question of proposing, call in the angels. Il Salviatino, a refurbished Renaissance-era manor within earshot of the bells and spectacle of the great duomo of Florence, presents surroundings that verge on pure religion. Each room, each suite is its own masterpiece, often with original recovered frescoes on the walls and ceilings, authentic antiques and views of the Tuscan countryside to bring on the wows … and the vows. The property’s two-night Proposal Package is good through March and includes breakfast, a couples massage in the Deverana spa, a romantic dinner in the Italian Garden (excluding beverages), a private jewelry shopping excursion on the Ponte Vecchio and Via Tornabuoni … and a back-up plan: open-bar all night if proposal is rejected. Bonus: count on a free anniversary night for every year to come if the proposal works. Price: $2,215 (Taxes, Service and VAT included). A Romance Package at Il Salviatino is available for $1,824 per night for two and includes breakfast for two, two one-hour spa treatments, a candlelight dinner, romantic turndown with chocolates, a bottle of champagne and a farewell gift.

Further north, the Armani Hotel Milano just opened and if fashion can make hearts jump, this property, with its 95 rooms and suites designed by the eponymous doge of style, can win over any hesitant heart. Combine business, shopping, dining, delighting, pampering and indulging in this trendy urban hideaway located in the fashion center of Europe. And just in time for Saint Valentine’s Day the Armani dresses up the holiday with a Romantic Experience that’s packed with style: Champagne, couples massage, romantic dinner and much more: $1,658.

Mexico

The Pacific Coast of Mexico beckons romantics with warm beaches and heart-warming suites, especially if the destination is Imanta, Punta de Mita. Find just 8 villas there, all decked out with private pools and sweeping views on 250 acres adjacent to a vast ecological reserve. The property’s signature Romantic Package is an all-inclusive, five-night perfect getaway. Rates start at $7,740 for two.

New Zealand

Whisk yourselves away to a land beyond time in the verdant islands of New Zealand. Romantic Hideaway packages present the Matakauri Lodge on South Island, a dazzling ode to sensuality and style hidden away in a glen beyond Queenstown and overlooking Lake Wakatipu. Or couples can choose Kauri Cliffs Lodge for sunset walks on the pink beaches of the Bay of Islands and private picnics on the cliffs overlooking the wild waves. Then times might call for nights of snuggling at Cape Kidnappers, a remote sheep farm of rolling glades along Hawkes Bay. Romantic Hideaway packages include a bottle of Champagne in room, romantic turn down services with rose petals, bath oil and candle. Also count on pre-dinner drinks and canapés, gourmet dinners, full breakfasts and a complimentary mini-bar (excluding liquor and wine). Priced from $1,500 per night for two.

Hawaii

Catch the peak of the great whale migration from beachfront villas, clinking Champagne glasses to this choice for an excellent romantic escape. The hideaway? Wailea Beach Villas on the coast of Maui. The lovers’ lair is an amenity-packed villa with all residential conveniences, so couples need not step out during their stay … unless they want to. The resort offers two pools (including an adults only pool) and all the services and provisions one would expect to find at a top property – butler service and private chef at the ready, room service, concierge desk.

New Zealand Resorts: Worth the Distance

Life in the Land of the Long White Cloud is colorful indeed, especially when you consider New Zealand has more species of ferns, flightless birds and baying sheep per square mile than most cities have people. So it’s not surprising that many New Zealand resorts on these north-south isles will encompass views that barely contain roads or cars, much less humans.

Getting away from it all is what a trip to New Zealand offers, even if that means escapes to the Middle Earth or the lands of Aslan. In real terms, visitors opt to visit such places as 90-Mile Beach, Bay of Islands, Rotorua, the Remarkables and Franz Josef Glacier. New Zealand is roughly 1,550 miles north to south on two great swaths of land. Some 15 hours flight from the U.S., arrival happens in what seems to be a parallel universe but the differences pop out amid colossal Kauri trees as old as the Bible and volcanic lakes that boil and blow – as if viewing the world from inside a time traveler’s mirror.

Kurtz-Ahlers & Associates, with its exclusive collection of hotels and resorts around the world, offers an exclusive New Zealand vacation package that allows the visitor to New Zealand to view the land as nature at its purest. New Zealand is nature left to do what it does as humans stay on the sidelines and watch the marvels unfold. Kurtz-Ahlers offers the freewheeling visitor to New Zealand a package of three places where luxurious accommodations, fine dining and pampering all play a part in perfecting the best ways to take in this unyielding performance.

The Farm at Cape Kidnappers

The Farm at Cape Kidnappers on the North Island, a six-hour drive from Auckland (although private flights and heli-transfers are at the ready), overlooks Hawkes Bay with 180-degree views of the roiling South Pacific. It’s all about the land here, 6,000 undulating acres of it on a working farm that supports an award-winning wine cellar along with gourmet dining, spa (ever had a jade and crystal facial?) and golf (par 71 and considered #27 on Golf Magazine’s “Best” list) amid flocks of sheep on a seemingly endless spread. But this New Zealand farm stay is a Relais & Chateaux presentation that combines the rustic and the modern, the craggy and the comfortable, the wide spaces and the 22 cozy cottages along rocky cliffs overlooking relentless crashing waves. Check out the four-bedroom Owner’s Cottage, a world unto itself.

Lodge at Kauri Cliffs

Sister property at the Bay of Islands, less than four hours drive from Auckland with air options cutting that time down to one hour, the Lodge at Kauri Cliffs presents a similar setting with astounding pans of the Pacific and its islands off the coast, and more than 6,000 acres of prime New Zealand landscapes to wander. Another property by Relais & Chateaux, Kauri Cliffs is hunting territory. Sheep are nowhere to be found. Rather, wild boar, possum and other wildlife can be found in a place where mountain biking, bushwalking, beach combing, golf and tennis are part of the daily activities menu. Kauri Cliffs offers New Zealand on a platter, leaving little not done. Tours to New Zealand nature reserves near and far come givens, as do swimming in the ocean, sunning by the pool and old-fashioned picnics on some magical scenic spot of choice.

Find 22 guest suites at this New Zealand Resort (plus two-bedroom Owner’s Suite), each with its own private porch, bedroom with sitting area and open fireplace, abutting a native forest and overlooking the golf course and the Pacific.

Matakauri Lodge

Ah, but sweet stays here come in “threes.” Rounding this trio of New Zealand resorts is Matakauri Lodge on New Zealand’s south island just minutes from downtown Queenstown on stunning Lake Wakatipu. While this area along the Remarkables and Walter and Cecil Peaks is considered the New Zealand capital of adventure travel with its plethora of bungee jump off spots, hiking trails, New Zealand mountain biking tours, jet boating, paragliding, and river runs, the lodge lasers in on the scenery as a modern oasis of calm.

Unlike its more traditional sisters, Matakauri’s design and layout makes a statement. The New Zealand resort is an art piece carefully crafted by celebrated Kiwi designer Virginia Fisher. Lines are clean, light is given a stage and each of the Lodge’s eleven cottage suites is a testament to the blending of high style with comfort, convenience and the complete agreement between the elements — inside and out. The scenery is the star here and the riveting interiors only serve to give natural New Zealand her close-up.

Dining means fine New Zealand wines and menus that change daily with the weather and the word about what’s fresh. Unlike other parts of the country, town and what comes with civilization is an easy walk away. And getting away from it all is just as simple, whether that means water, peaks or a forest of virgin pines. (packages?)

This faraway country need not confound. Rather it can be a cozy and comfortable portal to some of the most dramatic nature on earth. In the Land of the Long White Cloud, Kurtz-Ahlers’ trio of Relais & Chateaux resorts provides shelter from the storm.

The Ultimate New Zealand Package

What’s the Ultimate New Zealand Resort Deal? For visitors who want to rent a vehicle and take their time exploring, Kurtz-Ahlers offers a nine-night package that includes three nights at each resort: The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs, The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, and Matakauri Lodge. Three fabulous lodges, three spectacular settings, and nine glorious nights adding up to a savings of roughly NZ$1,695 (around $1,300 USD) per couple.
