potassium: important for sex??

By Delahna Flagg

How many have seen that popular scene in a movie when an older man experiences a heart attack in the midst of his actions with a younger woman? The man collapses of a heart attack, the young female panics and sometimes controversy breaks out in the media… Of course, my having binged on these types of scenes could lead to many questions but one that I had after, “is this for real?”, was, “What could cause this type of premature evacuation?”

Evidently the common cause for most cardiovascular attacks stem from the interruption of a necessary balance of potassium and sodium. For one, our muscles will not work efficiently if we do not have the proper balance and taking potassium daily can prolong your life and increase your stamina. An important realization is our lifestyles’ affect our body’s potassium. People who use drugs, drink alcohol, or enjoy a caffeinated beverage are filtering it out. As a matter of fact, potassium is percolating through your skin as sweat so load up on potassium-rich food before in engaging in any steamy activity. The exit of potassium leads to an unfortunate increase in the concentration sodium and can cause bloating or swelling- which really doesn’t help in feeling sexy- and it slows the metabolism.(Haas)

Counteracting the sodium with greater levels of potassium enhances the cardiovascular activity, helps define the muscles, and supports the nervous system. It is essential to have a healthy level in your system so that the brain can communicate efficiently to the body: “Move, baby, move!”
Potassium may not be something stimulating or even slightly sensual but it is necessary for your body to respond to all playful and intense behavior with stability. Potassium is found within items that are considered aphrodisiacs: bananas, cantaloupes, leafy green vegetables, citruses, meats, and certain fish. Everyone should be practicing the daily intake of [2000mg] potassium because in order to maintain great cardiovascular health you need to be sure that there is the proper potassium/sodium balance in your body. Not only does the relationship “generate muscle contractions,” it also “regulates the heartbeat.” (Haas) Now, where would we rate in bed if we couldn’t hold on tight to our lovers or other… things…and, of course, I think everyone can grasp how unattractive dropping dead could be. A dwindling level of potassium could lead to hypertension, congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia, fatigue,” even, “depression and other mood changes.” (Haas) Scary to think that one may not have the ability to avoid a poor sexual performance simply because their diet is low in fresh foods – How tragic.

Yes, the food we regularly consume does have potassium. However, the challenge of maintaining proper levels of potassium is that it’s soluble and therefore cooks out or quickly leeches out of our systems. Additionally, since potassium can be lost by drinking alcohol, smoking, sweating… tricky… Party animals beware that your party habits have a direct impact on your sex life. (However, in my opinion, all the more reason to increase the amount of fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins consumed- it’s not quite time to stop the party.) So, throw back a glass of orange juice, enjoy a fruit salad, or a rare steak with some greens and reward your libido with the opportunity for more fun.

Here’s to your health.

the heat of pheromones

When it comes to food and lust, we smell what we want.  Similar to how we sense a delicious meal in our vicinity, our noses attract us to individuals’ pheromones. We sniff out a man or woman as we would an after-dinner treat.

Yes Ladies and Gents, your nose is in control of your sexual reasoning.  It seeks out its preferred aroma and then tells your brain, “Go for it!” Of course, the message the brain receives is not just from your sense of smell, it is from a specialized region located behind the septum- the vomeronasal organs (VNOs). Signals picked up and delivered by the VNOs relate to sexual appetite, reproductive behavior, and even maternal behavior [Pines]. Wondering what aromas are charming you? Well… you may not believe it but the pheromones are wafting from the underarms and groin area. These regions are populated by apocrine glands- in short, the sweat glands riddled with and dependent on hormones.  The apocrine glands activate due to stress or when excited sexually thereby secreting your individual brand of pheromone- your ‘Eau de mois’- attracting others to you.

So when you see that person that kickstarts you, heating you steadily, take a moment to wonder. Within your attraction exists a scent that permeates your ability to reason.  Think about it, but beware of imitations. Cologne and perfume manufacturers know humans are attracted to natural scents- the wood, floral, and herbal scents resembling those of our skin. Top performers of the perfume industry utilize the scents of sandalwood, pine, gardenia, lavender, and rosemary to produce their highest earners. My best advice is to meet someone, spend days and nights together, and hope when their Gucci® dwindles your heat does not.

the bang of manganese

Manganese may be the catch-22 of nutrients; if deficient the body will breakdown, if in overabundance it will erupt.  Regardless…without a sufficient amount of manganese you will not be able to perform at peak ability. To boot, research has proved that insufficiency will diminish our reproductive systems.

The body does produce manganese, a chemical element found in many nutrients, to maintain average function. However eating items that contain it is very necessary. The health of your skin, bones, metabolism, sight, hearing and nervous system depends on a sufficient level of manganese.  Health professionals advise us that without it, you will age faster and pretty much go brittle.

Why? Because manganese nurtures your body’s enzymes and helps eliminate disease-causing free radicals. It improves your body’s defenses and cell regeneration; it balances sugars and combats histamines, bone loss and neurological or reproductive weakness. However, as I previously alluded, too much of this good thing can cause over-stimulation and excretion of the enzymes and minerals benefited by a daily dose. Follow the RDA. Only a little a day and your body will be fueled to function better at every moment (especially the intimate ones).

eating your daily allowance
For your daily serving, enjoy the dark, leafy greens (ie. kale, chard, collard greens) and have your fill of berries, grapes, legumes, and nuts.   Don’t deprive yourself of the richness of tropical fruits – especially pineapple.  Equally as important, try to limit your intake of antibiotics, alcohol, and drugs that deplete the manganese you use in aiding your body in rejuvenating. Ensure you’re ingesting your daily dose and get ready to reap the benefits of glowing skin, revved up metabolism and recharged reproductive system.

the aphrodisiac power of E

vitamin e for excellent

by delahna flagg

Perhaps it comes from living in a city immersed in health and skin crazes, LA girl that I am, but I have always known of Vitamin E as being essential to our daily nutrition.  I have found that vitamin E not only reduces wrinkles and softens skin but it also benefits circulation and the immune system.  Best of all, Vitamin E’s antioxidant properties protect the natural function of our bodies’ and, in turn, the effects of a vitamin E regimen will even benefit the activities of the bedroom.

Our health officials recommend a daily dose of Vitamin E, or alpha tocopherol, of 15 milligrams per day to prevent free radicals and lower the risk of heart disease.  This tocopherol protects the nutrients within us as it helps prevent vegetable oils and food nutrients from going rancid. Vitamin E’s prevalence in a balanced diet assures that the daily dose of 15mg is readily available (in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and fortified foods).  You can also find a wealth of Vitamin E vegetable oils including soybean, corn, cottonseed, safflower, nuts, seeds, and wheat germ. However heating these oils can destroy their vitamin content. (Instead of sautéing, you could consider a delicious vinaigrette).

Incorporating vitamin E into your diet will provide an increase in energy, very necessary for games of love.  Vitamin E’s anti-oxidant power controls and eliminates free radicals which may cause bodily inefficiencies. It improves heart health by lowering bad cholesterol and preventing plaque build up which could lead to heart failure or stroke.  Vitamin E will improve cardiovascular health and the body will store it for perpetually strengthening the immune system.

The body needs proper circulation and a strong immune system so it can rebuild and rejuvenate.  Vitamin E improves upon these by interfering with the formation of bad cells which could form plaque or cause the body’s weakening.  A slow in blood circulation or a weak immune system causes a person to have less energy and a poorer physical performance.  A deficient physical state can keep one from running, from dancing, and from – horrors – making love.  So, why not be mindful of what you put into yourself so you may be rewarded by what you can put out.

cacao’s theobromine

aphrodisiac chocolate

by delahna flagg

Theobroma cacao is the name given to the seeds of the Cacao tree. The main, active alkaloid found within these seeds is Theobromine. The characteristics of theobromine include the ability to energize and heal the human body. The Aztecs revered Theobroma as being god-like and indulged in these dark, exotic seeds to prepare physically and spiritually for battles as well as for love. It is well known that Montezuma, the Aztec emperor, drank many goblets – some historians say as many as 50 cups daily – of a cacao-infused beverage to be at his most virile before walking into his harem.

Theobromine itself is considered to be a stimulant. Its effect is caffeine-like and similar to tea. Although theobromine itself does not have caffeine, the stimulation of the heart and nervous system that it causes acts like a caffeine. (The increase in organic activity caused by Theobromine in humans can be major and damaging to dogs, hence why dogs should not eat chocolate.)

Chocolate itself, in its entirety, is believed to contain caffeine. However there is recent speculation that the caffeine-like effects of chocolate may come strictly from chocolate’s theobromine and phenyethylamine, a natural amphetamine linked with romance. Combine these ingredients may produce an aphrodisiac effect. Theobromine stimulates the nervous and cardiac systems and phenyethylamine acts as an antidepressant. However, on its own theobromine is a relaxant, a diuretic. Its pharmacological use has lowered blood pressure and has dialated blood vessels.

To test the alkaloid, theobromine has been orally fed to rats to prove the effects on the sexual organs. The research of a study completed in 1992 demonstrated that pure theobromine caused greater sperm count and testicular swelling. Whereas, theobromine once mixed with cacao extract (then more closely related to chocolate) did not have the strength to produce the same type of growth. Although the test did show that the chocolate-like dosage produced irregularities in high doses, whether or not the theobromine was in fact producing healthy sperm count was not mentioned.

Theobroma cacao may have given the Aztecs their strength to raise an empire however theobromine alone could not. While considered to be a naturally occurring aphrodisiac, theobromine could not produce the effects without the other elements of cacao. The polyphenols of cacao act as antioxidants which protect the body’s health. They protect against free radicals as does theobromine. The polyphenols found in cacao and theobromine produce antioxidant effects similar to much-touted oolong and green teas. Antioxidants cure bodies of irregular cells which can bring about disease. And though polyphenols and theobromine are not themselves antioxidants, they benefit circulation and cellular health all the same.

Processing cacao to make chocolate requires the addition of ingredients that diminish the effects of the polyphenols of the cacao bean. The potency of the original ingredient is dialed down by sugars and dairy to produce the different types of chocolate; the darker the chocolate the higher amount of theobromine and polyphenols. Dark chocolates do not have the strength of Montezuma’s virility drink but they are rich in theobromine and polyphenols which may produce the aphrodisiac effect sought. The effect of relaxation, of better circulation, of a strengthened nervous system- overall, improved function of the human body. Improving the harmony of our bodies will benefit their ability and use.
