revel in mouton rothschild

by Amy Reiley

There are few vintners in the world with enough styles to appease any
taste preference and budget, but the global spread of Bordeaux's
famed Mouton Rothchild may just allow the great house to fill this
rare bill. Most collectors love Rothschild for their esteemed and
mind-numbingly costly First Growth, but these days the winery's
offering choices for the working man.

2003 Domaines de Baron'arques
This is one of my absolute favorite wines for the price. It is fresh
and lively and ready to drink when released. Although it is full-
bodied with dark fruit, licorice and eucalyptus flavors, it has a
surprisingly approachable freshness.

2002 Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild
The “second label” of the famed Mouton Rothschild house, this wine is
made primarily from the young vines of Mouton's esteemed vineyards. A
lovely wine, slightly less complex than its big brother, Petit Mouton
still offers some of the house's signature rich fruit and caramel
characteristics.

2004 Graves Blanc Baron Philippe
Two of my favorite winespeak words for describing whites would have
to be “acidic” and “tropical.” Both words could be used to convey the
taste of this Bordeaux blanc. The topper? It's attainable on any budget.

2003 Saint Estephe Baron Philippe
In red wine, I love color and this wine shows off the best of the red
grape's stain. Classic “claret,” its flavors smack of cherry and
mineral. Although it offers a bit of that Bordeaux earthiness, it is
still pleasingly approachable.

2003 Mouton Cadet Rouge
Don't let the price fool you, this is a true Bordeaux blend with all
the characteristics collectors love, just made from slightly less
expensive and perhaps less expressive grapes. It's got blackberry and
currant flavors, a backbone of tannin and a hint of that Bordeaux earth.

2001 Escudo Rojo
A wine that can be classified as “good” not “great,” I'm featuring it
because I believe it showcases what is developing as a classic
Chilean style. Fruit-driven in style but no fruit bomb, evolving with
earthiness and the freshness of good acidity.

2002 Alma Viva
This is one of Chile's rising stars. A premium red blend with
elegance and body, it is an interesting and sophisticated wine. Its
tannins are fine-grained and its flavors mingle berries with spice.
