woman on wine

get your cock on

by Amy Reiley

Sometimes you just want to plunge your corkscrew into a wine that feels familiar, a wine that's uncomplicated and comes without too much expense. It's for these moments that I love a winery like Hahn Estates, or the “cock wines,” as my friends cheer when I pull out a bottle. (Hahn, which means “rooster” in German, brands every bottle with the crested head of a brown rooster). The winery has been producing solid, modestly priced wines since 1991. They are not the kind of wines that knock your socks off, but the kind of wines you can always rely on to offer the same quality and style vintage after vintage at respectable prices.

2004 Hahn Estates Cabernet Franc
A classic, American Cab Franc, I like to call it plummy and yummy. Fruit flavors include not only plums but a mix of cherries and berries. To round the flavor out there's a hint of dark chocolate and dusty tannin. $

2004 Hahn Estates Meritage
Surprisingly complex for the price, Hahn's meritage is built on a base of fruit-forward Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with just a smidge of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cab Franc. Cedar, bramble and cherry dominate the aromas. Flavors are an interesting blend of black cherries, blackberries and Middle Eastern spices. $$

2004 Hahn Estates Monterey Chardonnay
Although it offers a little more oak flavor than is to my taste, the toasty aromas do not overshadow the wine's sweet, juicy stone fruit flavors, a medley of apricots and peaches both yellow and white. $

2004 Hahn Estates Monterey Pinot Noir
A good backbone of fine tannins and bright acid lend structure to this affordable Pinot. Flavors are classic: red cherry and cola with just a hint of vanilla. $$

2004 Hahn Estates Syrah
A great, solid Syrah, it can easily compete with all the Aussie Shiraz that dominate the international marketplace. Peppery, leathery and jammy with juicy berry flavor - what more could you want? $
