malbec: the pumpkin pie wine?
For
those of you who are familiar with Malbec as a blender
in red Bordeaux, I know this wine/dessert link sounds
a little....well, weird. And maybe it is. But at a recent
tasting of Argentine Malbecs, I noticed a consistent
varrietal characteristic among almost all the wines.
The Malbecs offered aromas and flavors found in the
baking isle at Safeway. More specifically, Malbecs smell
like pumpkin pie.
I've
often heard wine pundits recommend Malbec as a money-saving
choice for Thanksgiving dinner. I assumed that affordable
Malbecs tend to offer bright flavors, not too much complexity,
and drink well young. But it never crossed my mind that
it could be because Malbec shares a flavor profile with
the signature turkey-day dessert.

(For more Thanksgiving tips from Natlalie, check out
the feature story, Thanksgiving
Tips for the Wine Lover.) This November's
Bon Appetit pairs Argentine Malbec with their
Thanksgiving feast, but with the dinner, not dessert.
I haven't personally tried pairing Malbec with pumpkin
pie, nor am I sure I would recommend it. But the combination
of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove most South American
Malbecs exhibit makes me think it could become a new
Thanksgiving tradition: sage-rubbed turkey, potatoes,
cranberry sauce and Malbec.
