Beverly Hilton

everything old is new again

by Sherry Amatenstein

One thing hasn’t changed. After all, even before the “New” Beverly Hilton’s recent $80 million dollar facelift its nearly Olympic-sized pool – inaugurated in 1955 by aquatic superstar Esther Williams who swam through an offering of white gardenias – was a romantic oasis perfect for hand-holding, cocktail sipping and celebrity watching.

In the last half century the hotel, located on 9 luxe acres in the heart of Beverly Hills, has housed more stars than the galaxy! Perhaps most renowned for being the west coast locale of then president John F. Kennedy’s numerous – uh, extracurricular - dalliances, today you’re likely to run into Paris sans Paris, Melanie and Antonio and/or Tom and Katie. That’s not including annual red carpet events hosted at the Hilton like the Oscars Contenders luncheon and Golden Globe awards.

After purchasing the hotel from entertainer Merv Griffin in 2004, mogul Beny Alagem determined that 50 would be a sexy milestone for the iconic 569-room hotel. Indeed, all rooms have hot 42 inch plasma HDTV’s, imported Italian linens, feather pillows and plush mattresses that makes you feel like you’ve died and gone to an imitation of heaven. A must-do is having cozy café a deux delivered to your balcony while gazing out at the Hollywood Hills. Oh la la!

Crave more decadence? The 9 Penthouse Collection suites, ranging from 830 to 3300 square feet, feature window-front tubs and a collection of romance-enducing candles.

The new lobby bar, spa and fitness center are not yet ready for their close-ups but wander downstairs for happy hour at Trader Vic’s restaurant-bar. The kitschy Polynesian outpost, ensconced here since the hotel’s opening attracts an eclectic clientele including on a recent night (dining separately) Latoya Jackson and OJ Simpson – the later with blonde(s) du jour.
Although the hotel is walking distance from Rodeo Drive and Century City, a complimentary town car ferries guests within a 3-mile radius. The famous Beverly Hilton Hotel. What’s old is new again…And eternally romantic. www.beverlyhills.hilton.com.
