This month's Divas include the masterminds of Canyon
Ranch, one of the most successful spa concepts in
the world, (not to mention one of the first spas to
offer massages for your pampered pet!) If you're like
us, you probably can't afford the time or the spare
change to check in for a week of C.R. pampering, so
we're bringing just a little bit to you so that, for
one night, you can luxuriate as the center of your
own universe.
The scene for this gig is no brain-teaser. Just turn
off the phone, hide the computer in the closet, turn
down the lights and strike up a little night music.
We don't want to write the script, because this is
your night. Do whatever makes you feel like the most
admired creature in the world. If it means splurging
on a spectacular candle, do it. Your needs may be
more basic. Maybe you simply want to hole up in your
favorite room. So clean it from baseboard to sill
a few days ahead in anticipation. You should look
forward to this night as much as a black tie ceremony
thrown in your honor.

Planning
Ahead
It
shouldn't take any special planning to pamper yourself,
but in the likelihood that you haven't had the privilege
of an evening to yourself since Carter was in office,
a little advanced prep might be in order.
Buy your supplies at least one day ahead, so that nothing
disturbs the indulgence of your starring night.
Have the house spic 'n span in honor of you. If this
means hiring a service, do it. Merry Maids are just
seven digits away. Set up a few candles, play a few
ethereal tunes and splurge on something pretty for both
you and your furry friend. Even isolation is more enjoyable
when its shared.
We think you'll enjoy your ME time so much, you're going
to hunger for more. Which is why we asked Sharon Stricker,
Spa Director at Canyon Ranch in Tucson to offer their
favorite pampering moments for everyday:
To help keep a positive awareness of the world around
you every day, make a list of three things that you
enjoyed.
Go outside and play. Tennis, hiking and bicycling are
great cardiovascular activities that also help with
balance and gracefulness.
Add 30 minutes of sleep every night. Studies show that
sleep deficit is associated with weight gain.
To help remind you of morning exercise intentions, lay
out your exercise clothes the night before.
Too tired to exercise today? Put on your shoes and get
on a treadmill or walk around the block for five minutes.
Most days you'll find your energy level rises and you'll
want to continue. If you still feel fatigued after five
minutes, take time to rest instead. Even five minutes
a day raises your metabolism and keeps your exercise
program running.
To increase muscle mass, add strength training such
as free weights, weight machines, resistance bands or
floor exercises. Muscle is more dense and firmer than
fat, and burns more calories.
Don't diet. Dieters tend to lose almost as much muscle
as fat, lowering your metabolism. Instead, practice
healthful eating and avoid overeating or undereating.
Exercise with a friend. That day you don't feel up to
going, knowing that your friend is waiting for you will
help keep you on track. And, you'll be there to help
out on her rough days.
